Appeal to Political and Business Leaders in Japan

Advocacy200814E

Japan Institute for National Fundamentals(JINF) placed an advocacy ad regarding Japanese political and business leaders and growing threats of China in three major national dailies, Nikkei, Sankei and Yomiuri, on Friday, August 14.

The following is a translation of the advocacy ad.

Appeal to Political and Business Leaders in Japan

You have been saying, “Japan needs to rely on the United States for its security, while it has to rely on China for its economic well-being.” However, a series of recent China policy speeches by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other senior U.S. officials have made it clear that such an expedient is not admissible anymore. The Pompeo speech on July 23 articulates a declaration of war on China over the inalienable values upheld by the United States. Unlike the Soviet Union, China is so deeply integrated into the global economy that it is unlikely to be easy to confront China.

Mr. Pompeo said in his speech: “Indeed, we have a NATO ally of ours that hasn’t stood up in the way that it needs to with respect to Hong Kong because they fear Beijing will restrict access to China’s market. This is the kind of timidity that will lead to historic failure, and we can’t repeat it.”

We’d like to ask our country’s political and business leaders a question: What kind of Japan you want to leave for your children and grandchildren?

The path Japan should go forward on is the one toward self-reliance by greatly transforming itself while enhancing the modes of bilateral cooperation with the United States. The path should go further toward joint cooperation with the United States and other partner countries for safeguarding peace and stability of Asia.

We’d like to draw attention of political and business leaders in Japan to the following fact: The United States has finally got prepared to deal in earnest with the threats posed by China. Japan, for its part, should be awakened to this fact. Japan must stop putting its future into the hands of another country as it is today.
